Course Description: This is a fun, engaging, awareness-raising and theoretically accessible online two ½ day introduction to ISTDP (Intensive Short Term Dynamic Therapy). This training will also feed into a 3-year Core Training Program planned for 2025, for those with further interest.
ISTDP is a psychoanalytical approach developed by Habib Davanloo and David Malan in the 1980’s to address concerns around the extensive time taken to achieve client outcomes through traditional psychoanalytical approaches. This unique approach uses in-depth video analysis of client sessions and focusses on moment-to-moment responses from the client to assess, formulate and treat.
Areas to be covered in the two ½ day training:
- Psychoanalytical underpinnings of ISTDP
- Understanding anxiety as a signal from the unconscious
- Defense mechanism analysis and work
- The Triangle of Conflict and the Triangle of Person (Malan and Davanloo) and their use in assessment, formulation and treatment
- In-depth video analysis (real client sessions) demonstrating the approach.
This training is for qualified and experienced mental health professionals (including psychologists, psychiatrists, mental health social workers and trained counselors/psychotherapists). Participants will be requested to sign a confidentiality agreement during registration, as real client cases will be shown in training.
